A Guide to Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southwestern Utah and is visited by over 2.5 million people every year! This park was established in 1923 and was originally named Utah National Park. A few years later, it was renamed to Bryce Canyon to further distinguish it from other parks in Utah. Unlike many other national parks with mountains and dense forests, Bryce boasts vibrant orange canyons and unique rock formations called “hoodoos.” These rock pillars are formed by water and frost erosion and provide a spectacular view for visitors, especially at sunrise and sunset.

One of the most popular and scenic hikes in Bryce Canyon is the Queen’s Garden trail, which begins at Sunrise Point at the top of the canyon’s rim. This short 0.9 mile hike offers terrific views of the hoodoos, including most of the well-known rock formations including the Queen’s Castle and Queen Victoria. Avid hikers can lengthen this hike by adding on the Navajo Loop trail. This 1.4 mile loop is rated as moderate, because it does have some steep inclines and switchbacks. Be sure to bring plenty of water and a hat to provide shade from the sun!

While in Bryce, most visitors also visit Inspiration Point, which is a lookout point on the canyon’s rim. Because this observation lookout is handicap accessible, visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy this wonderful overview of the canyon. The red, orange and white rocks make this spot a perfect photo opportunity, so you can expect to see many photographers there, especially at sunrise or sunset. When it snows, this is also a popular place to take captivating photos of the orange hoodoos blanketed in white snow.

Finally, because Bryce is far removed from large cities and has a high elevation, this park is ideal for stargazing at night. When you’re there, be sure to step outside and look up at the thousands of stars! In the summer months, park rangers offer 20-minute astronomy tours, pointing out planets, large stars, and constellations. On nights with a full moon, you can also sign up for a guided Full Moon Hike with a park ranger leading the way.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a unique nature experience and breathtaking scenery like you’ve never seen before, check out Bryce Canyon National Park! You’ll be glad you did!
