A Guide to Yellowstone

Yellowstone is another one of my favorite parks that I have visited. This park is so unique and should definitely be a must on your list! This Wyoming national park preserves over 10,00 hydro thermic features! What are those you may ask? Hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots, and lots and lots of geysers. In fact, Y over half the world’s thermometric features are within Yellowstone’s 2,221,766 acres of land. These amazing geysers are like nothing you have seen before. These thermal pools are filled with microorganisms called thermophiles. These heat-loving microorganisms give the thermal pools is brilliant multi colors.

People have been visiting this land for over 11,000 years. The park used to be home, hunting grounds, and transportation routes for many Native American tribes and bands. The land was established as the world’s first national park in 1872.

The beautiful park has about 4.15 million visitors each year and is great for any skill level. This park has some challenging hikes, but also provides many easy scenic nature walks around the geysers. Most of the nature walks have boardwalks that are handicap accessible.

Here are some of the most popular attractions of Yellowstone!

Grand Prismatic Spring

The Grand Prismatic Spring is one of the coolest things that I have seen. This is the largest and one of the most vibrant hot springs in the United States. It is the most photographed thermal feature in Yellowstone. The 370-foot wide hot spring is bigger than a football field and deeper than the height of a 10-story building.

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is known for its outstanding view. It is downstream from Yellowstone Falls which consists of 2 major waterfalls on the Yellowstone River. The canyon is about 24 miles long and is as deep at 1,000 feet. The canyon has a variety of different overlooks as well as trails and walkways that go along the canyon rim.

Old Faithful

This cones geyser is one of the parks most popular attractions. In 1870, it was the first geyser in the park to be named. It is known to be highly predictable and the geothermal feature erupts every 44minutes to 2 hours. It has been on this continuous eruption cycle since 2000. The eruption lasts between 1.5 to 5 minutes and gets up to 185 feet high.

Some other popular Yellowstone features…

Remember: When visiting this park, remember to pay attention to signage posted. STAY ON THE PATH! You don’t want to fall into these thermal pools…. Trust me, people have and often times their remains are never found. Bodies tend to dissolve in boiling acidic pools.
